US Open 2013 – week 2, Monday

I expected Simona Halep to be pushed a lot closer than she was by Kirilenko. Having watched most of the match this morning I was impressed by Halep’s energy and she was just too strong and consistent for Kirilenko.

I have a concern about the amount of tennis she has played. When she had her excellent run on the clay earlier in the season it eventually took its toll on her. She is very ambitious and seems to be loving her new found form. Her sights are firmly set on a top 10 place and she will run until she drops to make the most of a good run at this tournament.

Pennetta is perhaps known better for her clay court play but her record at the US Open is superb. She missed the event last year due to injury but other than that since 2008  she has only failed once to reach the quarter finals. She lost in the third round in 2010.

Halep was playing Pennetta at the Swedish Open when she succumbed to injury earlier this year. Pennetta also won their only other meeting in 2010.

Pennetta has beaten Errani and Kuznetsova to reach this stage. Having watched the match against Kuznetsova I was impressed with Pennetta’s play. I had thought when I saw the score that Kuznetsova must have had one of her off days but in fact they both played extremely well.

It is hard to go against Halep at the moment but 1.30 is too low. I expect 3 sets and will look to back Halep a break down in the opening set. Ideally she takes the set and I can lay her with some of the profit.

Halep to win in 3.

Updates: Halep was tired but Pennetta deserved the win.

Pennetta won 6-2, 7-6.

Azarenka lost a set to Cornet in the last round. When she met Ivanovic earlier this season in Carlsbad Azarenka won in 3 sets so another match that goes the distance isn’t out of the question. She has won the last 3 meetings with Ivanovic but 1.14 is too low and has to be laid.

Alternatively we can wait for her to go a break ahead before laying as she has won the opening set each time they have met..

Azarenka will find a way to win this one.

The rain delayed this match until Tuesday

Kohlschreiber may be able to take a set from Nadal and I expect Federer to get the job done in 3 sets.

Update: Kohlschreiber took the opening set. Fed DID get the job done in 3 sets if the job in hand was to get beaten. Robredo won in straight sets.

The other matches are covered for the SHARK TIPS  subscribers but Ferrer is too low at 1.30!

Update: Ferrer traded a lot higher but won in 4 sets. Tipsarevic served for the first 3 sets and failed twice.
