US Open 2015 – Week 2, Monday

Thanks for the kind messages over the last few days.  I’m still in Yorkshire though accessing my PC remotely. I’ll be back in Worcester this afternoon.

It looks like I missed a few great matches! Fognini beating Nadal in 5 and Lisicki coming back from 1-5 in the third against Strycova in particular.

Most of today’s matches don’t look too exciting though!

ATP, 17:30 – Wawrinka v Young

Head to heads are  1-1. Both matches were in 2011. Wawrinka won in 3 sets in Shanghai on a hard court and Young won in the US Open in a 5th set tie break.

Both have improved since their previous matches. Young seems to be finally starting to grow up. He gave a very interesting press conference after his last match. He talked about  a lot of things but it included his need to train more consistently and keep the intensity higher for longer. Last week he came back from 2 sets down against Simon and Troicki and also needed 4 sets to beat Bedene. They get a day off between matches but his body will start to hurt soon if it isn’t already.

Wawrinka has won 2 slams since they last played. He hasn’t dropped a set yet though it has to be said he has had a very easy draw. Five of his 9 sets have been tie breaks and all his sets have been close. He will have the crowd against him today.

Young can’t afford another slow start today. Wawrinka will win. Its just about how hard or easy it is. Back Wawrinka if he loses set 1.  I am hoping Young can make a match of it at least.

WTA 19:30 – Stosur v Pennetta

Pennetta leads 7-0!  All their matches were on hard courts. Stosur has taken just 2 sets from her. Their most recent match was this season in Indian Wells. Pennetta won 6-4, 6-2.

Pennetta reached at least the quarter finals in 5 of her last 6 visits to the US Open.

Both needed 3 sets in their last matches. Pennetta lost the opening set against Cetkovska 1-6 and Stosur lost the 2nd against Errani though she hadn’t beaten the Italian since 2012.

I think this will be a close one and they will go to 3 sets. Pennetta has the better record in the US Open despite Stosur winning the title in 2011. I just have a feeling Stosur gets her first win over Pennetta today. Lay the 1st set winner.  Lay Pennetta if she takes an early break lead.
