US Open – Women’s Final

S Williams v Stosur:

Head to heads are 4-3 to Williams but Stosur’s last “win” was due to Williams pulling out of Cincinnati last month.

They had very different semi finals. Stosur started very well against Kerber but lost her way in the second set. She needed a third set to book her place in the final.

Williams had, on paper, the tougher draw against world number 1 Wozniacki. However the Dane was made to look very ordinaryas Williams won 6-2, 6-4. Serena has yet to lose a set although had a tie break against Azarenka.

Williams seems to have lost nothing during her extended absence from the tour. She has returned  to top form very quickly and will win the title today. Stosur tends to freeze in the big games. We saw some of that in her semi final but Kerber couldn’t take advantage.

Williams starts at 1.19 and there is always the possibility that she starts slowly but I really don’t think that will happen. She is 1.51 to win in straight sets which is an option.

Update: Well I didn’t see THAT coming. Stosur served extremely well and when presiously she would have crumbled she stayed strong. Even when Serena was showing her dark side and threatening the umpire like a back street thug Stosur only wobbled for a game or 2 and then broke the American.

Stosur won 6-2, 6-3.

Hopefully the WTA take some action against Williams who needs to be taught that she can’t speak to officials that way but I think its highly unlikely that anything will be done.

  1. Serena was a disgrace in the way she acted. We all know she is a great player but she needs to show some humility and respect for the game of tennis and certainly the officials. The game of tennis is bigger than any player and Serena needs to understand this.

    1. I’ve never liked people who think they are better than others. Serena’s arrogance is nothing new but when the pressure’s on she shows her true self. She thinks she is untouchable. I can’t think of another WTA player who would act the way she did or speak to the umpire the way she did. Many players have fallen out with the umpire, in fact I remember Fed doing it in the US Open final with Del Potro but Williams’ behaviour was on another level. It was nasty with implied threats and the umpire, who followed the laws of the game exactly, should not have had to take that in front of millions of people.

  2. It was partially satisfying to see Williams lose the match after making threats to the umpire. It will be even more satisfying, however, if officials take further action for such disgraceful behaviour.

    1. Won’t happen. They have decided it wasn’t a serious incident and she has avoided a ban and been fined $2000.
Any other player would have been banned. 2k is a joke. That doesnt hurt her for a second.
