Anna Schmiedlova is a new face on the main tour though she has seen some success on the ITF circuit. She came through the qualifying rounds this week beating Peer. Whilst it has been suggested that Peer knew she was into the main draw already as Lucky Loser the 18 year old Slovak served well winning 84% of points on her first serve.
In her first ever main draw match she beat Cornet 6-3, 6-0. In that match she won 81% of first serve points but her first serve found the target more often than in her previous match. First serve percentage was an impressive 68%.
Today’s opponent is Petra Martic who secured her first win of 2013 when she beat Svitolina in 3 sets in round 1. Martic served 8 aces in that match but also double faulted 7 times.
Betfair has them at evens and I am favouring Schmiedlova to take a tight set. She has been very consistent and as long as the weight of expectation doesn’t affect her she has a great chance.
Hewitt starts as a 1.60 favourite against Alund who is no mug on clay. Hewitt may be fatigued by a long journey to the States from Uzbekistan. He played the doubles for Australia in their Davis Cup match on Saturday.
Hewitt has a good record in Houston and whilst a tough match today may make him a lay for the second round I think he has enough experience to get through this match. I’d expect him to trade higher than 1.60 though.
Lorenzi has a great chance against Cipolla tonight. The SP of 1.40 is a little low though and I will be waiting for 1.65 to 1.70 . Cipolla has been in poor form in recent weeks and Lorenzi has played so excellent tennis.
