A lot of games today. The quality of the early WTA hasn’t been great but enough swings to make it worth getting up early.
Laura Robson is playing Jie Zheng of China. They start at evens.
Both had decent runs at the US Open with Robson reaching the 4th round beating Li Na and Clijsters.
Zheng actually only won 1 match as her first round opponent Razzano retired in the third set.
Zheng will have the local support but if Robson can serve well as she usually does she has a great chance. I won’t be backing at evens though and will be looking to lay Zheng after she breaks early.
Florian Mayer played extremely well in both his singles matches in the recent Davis Cup tie with Australia. That was on clay though. On hardcourts he has only taken 1 set from James Blake in 3 matches. Their most recent was in 2009. Blake’s knee used to work properly back then.
Blake starts as slight favourite at 1.90 . He is serving well but is up against a very confident Mayer. The German doesn’t have a good record at this tournament but hasn’t been there since 2006.
I expect this to be a close match and if Mayer can get a grip of Blake’s serve then he has the better all round game to get his first win over the American.
We know all about Muller’s serve but he will need more than that to beat Frenchman Mathieu in front of his home fans.
Mathieu loves the big matches with a crowd that’s on his side. I’m not sure Muller counts as a big opponent but the crowd will certainly be making some noise. Mathieu starts as favourite at 1.66 and since it may take him a couple of Muller’s service games until he can read the serve ( they have never played before) I think we will see 1.75 easily in the first 2 or 3 games.
If Mathieu can control himself then he has the game to win this one in straight sets. However sometimes he gets carried away and goes for the big showboat passing shots when a simple shot would have done the job just as well.
I want at least 1.75 to 1.80 before I put any money on him. I am also looking for him to be holding his own serve fairly comfortably before backing him too heavily.
