ATP 16:00 – Djokovic v Wawrinka
Djokovic leads 20-4. Their most recent meeting was this season’s French Open final. Wawrinka won in 4 sets.
Wawrinka has shown in slams that he can take Djokovic to 5 sets or beat him. This isn’t a slam but its still a massive event. Wawrinka showed yesterday against Karlovic that he is interested in this tournament. He faced a barrage of 35 aces from Karlovic but came back from losing the opening set to win in 3 tie break sets.
Djokovic also needed 3 sets in his last match against Goffin . Goffin is starting to get near his 2014 form and was able to break Djokovic 5 times.
Djokovic clearly isn’t 100% this week and I think Wawrinka can at least take this to 3 sets. Lay the set 1 winner. Wawrinka has lost the opening set in both his matches.
WTA 20:00 – Svitolina v Safarova
Svitolina won their only previous meeting in Indian Wells in March. She won in two tight sets. Safarova wasn’t playing great tennis around that time. The sets were close (7-6, 7-5).
Svitolina has been having problems on serve recently though has been better this week.
Safarova’s win yesterday over an injured Bencic at least gave her some serving practise and let her get a feel for her passing shots and conditions.
The stats aren’t conclusively with either player. My gut feeling is that Safarova takes it but I think it will be another close match. Three sets are likely.
Back Safarova if she gets broken first.
