Wimbledon 2014 – Week 1, Day 4

WTA 11:30Cornet hasn’t won 2 matches in a row since she won the title in Katowicz in April. She has had some tough opponents to be fair with the exception of Taylor Townsend in the second round of the French open. She put up an excellent fight against Kerber last week and looked like winning. Kerber won in a third set tie break.

Cetkovska blows hot and cold. She had a couple of decent tournaments in the clay season including a third round in Rome as a qualifier. She lost in the first round of the french open as a 1.60 favourite and in the third round in Birmingham as a 1.50 favourite.

Cetkovska has better number on grass in the last 12 months but she is less predictable than Cornet.

Cornet starts at 1.62 which feels too low. She has had a mix of good and bad sets in her last couple of matches so I will wait for her to go behind before backing her.

Update: Cornet was broken at the start and trailed for most of the set before breaking twice to take the set. Cetkovska leveled it at 1 set all but Cornet took the decider.

Cornet won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

ATP, 11:30Vesely has played a lot of tennis in June having reached 2 finals in Challenger events on clay. Playing Monfils will need more energy than he is likely to have today. He did get a break in his first round match when Estrella Burgos retired in the first set.

Monfils had 3 close sets with Jazri in the first round and it could be a similar match today. Vesely’s serve can keep him in this one and Monfils can often throw in a poor service game to keep things interesting.

Monfils starts at 1.32 but as this is all about serve we could easily see him go an early break down and we get a better entry price on him.

Update: What a bizarre match. Monfils wasn’t happy for most of the opening 2 sets. He seemed to be limping and on a few points he simply didn’t move for the ball.

Vesely took the first 2 sets and it looked like it was all over but Monfils came back to take sets 3 and 4 in tie breaks. Vesely took a tight 5th set.

Vesely won 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4.

ATP, 13:00 – The rematch! Nadal v Rosol.

Rosol came to the public’s attention 2 years ago when he beat Nadal at Wimbledon.

Nadal wasn’t in good shape 2 years ago. He was having real problems with his knees which affected his confidence. This year he seems to be close to his best and I don’t expect a shock result this time. His recent loss to Dustin brown was a little bizarre but he wasn’t interested in that match.

Rosol will come out swinging and I don’t see why he wouldn’t take a set today other than the fact that Nadal will try to make a point that when he is fit Rosol has no chance.

Nadal starts at 1.10 . It’s worth a cheap lay at 1.05 or 1.06 in case Rosol finds the lines early.

Update: Rosol did come out swinging and went a set and break up. Nadal fought back to take the match in 4 sets.

Nadal won 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

WTA 14:00Petkovic, Ivanovic and Flipkens all start around 1.20 and I will be waiting for a slow start before backing them. they should be too strong for their respective opponents.

Update:  Flipkens didn’t trade higher. I got on Ivanovic at 1.50 and Petkovic went to 3 sets with Begu but I didn’t trade it. She is bound to have traded higher but I don’t know how high.

ATP, 16:00Hewitt can be a frustrating player to have money on. He is on his favourite surface here and has enjoyed a lot of success at Wimbledon over the years. However since reaching the 4th round in 2010 he hasn’t been past the second round. He will feel he has a good chance of winning this one.

Janowicz reached the semi finals last year losing to Murray in 4 sets. His form since then hasn’t been great with one quarter final and a semi final, both on hard courts. other than those two tournaments his form has been disappointing. Being back at Wimbledon may inspire him though he wasn’t looking particularly inspired in his 5 set win over Devvarman in the first round.

I think Hewitt will nick this one but he will need to improve on his performance from the service line. His first serve percentage in the first round was just 55% although he only gave up 5 break point chances and saved 2 of them.

I want a price nearer evens before i even think about entering on Hewitt.

Update: The match was delayed by rain. They will resume on Friday

WTA, 16:00 Alison Riske had an excellent win over Pavlyuchenkova in the first round. She came back from losing the opening set. Her recent form hasn’t been spectacular but she really looks at home on the grass.

Giorgi grabbed some headlines last week when she beat Azarenka although Azarenka was in her first match back after injury. She came close to beating Wozniacki but was put off by a delay in the match caused by a spectator becoming ill.

Giorgi lifts her game for the big occasion and I think this will be a decent match to watch. Giorgi is more prone to double faults as she doesn’t really take anything off her second serves so Riske will have her chances.

Giorgi starts as a very slight market favourite. I will be laying the first player to break. This could easily go to 3 sets so if the opening set is competitive I will be laying the first set winner too.

I am slightly favouring Giorgi but its a tough one to call.

Update: Giorgi was broken at the start but broke back straight away. Riske took a tight set but Giorgi was very poor in set 2.

Riske won 7-5, 6-2.
