Djokovic v Federer
A disappointing performance from Andy Murray gives us a final with the 1st and 2nd ranked players.
Federer leads the head to heads 16-13 and has won their last 2 matches. Of their matches in the last 2 years only 2 have been finals. Due to their rankings they have met in semi finals in 8 of their last 10 matches. Their most recent meeting was in the final of Cincinnati where Federer won in straight sets. the other final was in the Oz Open 2011 which went Djokovic’s way, also in straight sets. On indoor hard courts Federer leads 3-1.
Federer made a slow start against Murray and was immediately broken. With Murray serving at 4-3 Federer changed his tactics and tried to rush Murray with a little chip and charge. It worked and brought about the re-break. Federer took the set in a tie break. Murray looked deflated and was soon a break down in the second set. Federer finished him off in 2 sets.
Djokovic found himself a set and a break down in his semi final with Del Potro. Djokovic broke back straight away and Then increased the pressure on the big man who looked like he had given all he had to get the lead that he wasn’t able to hang on to. He only won 3 games in the remaining set and a half.
The two finalists have used their immense experience as well as their considerable talent to reach this stage. The outcome is not easy to predict.
Federer has a superb record on indoor hard courts. Djokovic has an equally amazing self belief.
Fed’s serve has been poor this week although there have been improvements in each match.
Djokovic starts at 1.72 but as it’s indoors I feel the value is on Federer. Their matches rarely go as I expect but I am favouring federer today. I have a gut feeling that he will find his first serve from the start and that it will make the difference. Will be a very entertaining end to the tournament however it turns out.
Update: Federer took an immediate lead in each set but was pulled back each time. Djokovic wins the title and remained unbeaten so deserved the win.
Djokovic won 7-6, 7-5.
