Tipsarevic v Berdych:
Tipsarevic comes into replace injured Andy Murray. He leads the head to heads 4-3. They played 3 times in 2011. In one of them Berdych retired injured and the other two matches were shared with berdych winning their last encounter in Paris.
Tipsarevic is at a slight disadvantage as Berdych has played a match on the court.
Berdych must have thought he was in with a chance of beating Djokovic who wasn’t serving well and was clearly affected by his shoulder injury. However the Serb was able to take the match in a third set tie break. How much will that loss play on Berdych’s mind?
Their recent matches have all had close sets with a single break seperating them so we should expect a tight match again today.
Berdych should really be able to get off to the better start but I don’t expect Tipsarevic to take long to get used to the court. He has had plenty of time to use the practice courts which were set up exactly the same.
I give a slight edge to Tipsarevic here. 2 tight sets or a 3 setter.
Update: Tipsarevic actually got off to a very quick start and had won the set before Berdych knew what hit him. Tipsarevic’s level dropped in the second set and Berdych levelled the match.
In the third it was very tight and they ended up in a tie break which Berdych won.
Berdych won 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Djokovic v Ferrer:
Djokovic leads the head to heads 6-4 with 3 of Ferrer’s wins coming on clay. Their only 2011 meeting was also on clay and it went o Djokovic in 3 sets.
We saw from his last match against Berdych that Djokovic’s serve was being affected by his shoulder problems. Some of his first serves were at second serve speed. I remember one over head smash that he hit and he had no power on it at all.
Ferrer could give him some problems tonight as without the “cheap points” on serve Djokovic will have to work so much harder than usual to hold his own serve. His ground strokes seemed ok so i think this will be a tight match.
Ferrer will need to be solid on serve as Djokovic showed against Berdych he can find a way to win matches even when not in top shape.
I have to go with Djokovic for the win but I’ll be waiting for a higher price in the first set than his SP of 1.33
