WTA Connecticut Open, New Haven: Kontaveit v Puig

Due to start at 8 pm

Kontaveit 1.64,  Puig  2.50

This will be their first meeting.

Both players have won 57% of their matches this season. Puig’s hard court results are a little better.

Kontaveit needed 3 sets to beat Lucky Loser Parmentier in the last round. She lost her serve in the first game of the match and even though she got the break back  to level the set at 2-2 she was broken again. In her first service game of set 2 she had to save 4 break points but managed to hold. She broke the Parmentier serve twice to take the set.  She was fairly comfortable in the deciding set.

Monica Puig

Puig has come through the qualifying rounds beating Niculescu and Petkovic. Despite losing her serve in the first game of the match with Bacsinszky, Puig took the set with a late break of serve. Her serve was more solid in the second set.

Some value on Puig and I think she can take at least a set. Lay Kontaveit around 1.40 and remove liability at 1.80.

Update: Puig was broken in the first game of the match but immediately broke back. She took a messy first set which saw 7 breaks of serve. She was broken in the first game of the second set too but won the match in straight sets.

Puig 6-4, 6-3.
