V Williams 1.67, Sevastova 2.44
Venus won their only previous meeting in February 2016. That was in a quarter final in Kaohsiung on a hard court and she won in straight sets.
Slightly better overall results for Venus but there’s not too much between them in the last 12 months.
Sevastova has better hard court results this year. She beat Goerges in straight sets in the last round. She struggled a little to beat Puig in the first round and needed 3 sets. She started the year well on hard courts with a semi final in Brisbane in week 1.
Venus beat her sister Serena in straight sets. She was only broken twice and was perhaps trying for too much with her second serve as she hit 8 double faults. Cirstea broke her 3 times in round 1 but was also beaten in straight sets
I have to favour Venus. She hasn’t played a lot of tennis this year but the crowd will be with her and her experience should prove too much for Sevastova. Back her above 1.85.
Update: Venus struggled with her serve and was twice a break behind in the opening set. She came close to losing it but fought back to win 7-6, 6-4.
