WTA Luxembourg, Second Round: Cirstea v Goerges

Sorana Cirstea 3.30, Julia Goerges 1.42

Due to start at 7 pm.

Head to heads are 2-2. Their most recent match was in April 2014 on a clay court in Stuttgart.  Goerges won in 2 sets. She won their only indoor match in Linz, Austria in 2009. That one also ended in straight sets.

Overall results are quite even this season but favour Goerges.

Goerges has a better indoor record but has been below her best this season. She has still won 4 of her 6 matches indoors. She is the defending champion this week so has some added motivation. She served well in her first set with Petkovic last week but when she lost the set in a tiebreak she appeared to give up and didn’t win a game sin set 2. Perhaps she was saving her  physical and mental energy to try to defend her title this week. She started slowly in her 1st round match with Misaki Doi and lost a tight opening set before easily taking the next 2 sets.

Cirstea has had an overall disappointing season with the occasional decent tournament. She made the quarter finals in Shenzhen on hard courts in the first week of the season and another quarter final in Budapest, this time on clay, in February. She has another good week on clay just before the French Open and reached the semi finals in Nurnburg.  A third round finish at the US Open was a surprise but no fluke as she reached the final in Tashkent last month. She was fairly comfortable against Parmentier in her first round match this week.

Cirstea should be competitive and I can see this going to 3 sets. I’ll wait for a slow start from Goerges ( she started slowly in the last round). Back Goerges around 1.85 or if she loses set 1. Lay the set 1 winner.

Update: Very tight match! There was only 1 break point in the first set and that was enough for a late break for Cirstea that gave her the set. In set 2 both players had 2 break chances. Goerges took one of them for a 4-3 lead and held on for the set.

The deciding set started with both player being broken. Cirstea served at 4-4 and was broken to love. While attempting to serve out the match Goerges survived 2 break points and got the job done.

Goerges won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
