Kerber leads their previous meetings 4-3. They last met in the final in Cincinnati just before this tournament and Pliskova won in straight sets. Kerber had played a lot of tennis before that match and had been in the final of the Rio Olympics the previous week.
Pliskova has raised her level in this tournament. Her record in grand slams was terrible for someone with her ability. She seems to have broken her jinx and has beaten both Williams sisters on the way to the final. Only Venus was able to take a set from her.
Kerber will take over the world number 1 ranking from Serena Williams when the rankings are updated on Monday. She has been the player of the season and this will be her third slam final in 2016. She took the title in Melbourne in January. She hasn’t dropped a set so far and has beaten Kvitova, last year’s finalist Vinci and a rejuvenated Wozniacki.
This should be a really interesting final and their meeting 2 weeks ago adds even more spice to the occasion.
I think we get 3 sets tonight. Taking the number 1 spot could distract Kerber a little or it could inspire her even more! Pliskova is playing the best tennis of her life and is starting to believe in herself. I have a sneaky feeling she can take her first slam title today.
Kerber starts around 1.60. Lay her if she gets the first break of serve. Lay the set 1 winner.
