ATP All American Cup, 5th July 2020

At least Betfair have these markets up already. The Friendship Cup matches were added half way through the second set of the first match.

These are exhibition matches so you are advised to use reduced stakes.

Matches are the best of 3 sets. If a 3rd set is required it will be a tie break (First to 10 points).

Querrey (1.22) v King (4.2)

Due to start at 5 pm

First meeting.

Querrey has been serving fairly well though his return game still needs some work. He beat Tommy Paul in the last match in 3 sets after losing to Covid-19 positive Frances Tiafoe.

King has had a good 12 months on the Challenger tour. He has played a lot of tennis during the pandemic. He has played mostly very low ranked opponents but has beaten Donald Young twice and also beat Chris Eubanks in May. He has won 13 of his 15 matches so his confidence should be high. He lost easily to John Isner yesterday.

King’s best hope is to take the sets to tie breaks. We can try a small lay on Querrey around 1.15 and remove liability around 1.35 to 1.40. Back Querrey if he loses set 1.

Isner (1.24) v Eubanks (4.3)

Due to start around 6:30 pm

First meeting.

Isner easily beat Kevin King in his last match. He beat Taylor Fritz in his first match this week.

Eubanks beat in form Sandgren in straight sets. Eubanks only faced 4 break points in the match. All those break points were in the same game.

We could try a lay on Isner between 1.15 and 1.20 and remove liability around 1.30 to 1.35. I expect Isner to win in straight sets.

Sandgren (2.0) v Fritz (2.0)

Due to start at 11 pm

Fritz won both their previous matches. Both were in August 2017 on hard courts. He won both in straight sets.

Sandgren has better overall results in the last 12 months and also in 2020. He has a slight edge on hard courts.

Fritz is playing his first event since March. He has lost to Steve Johnson in 3 sets and John Isner in 2.

Sandgren has played 5 matches already this week. Was he tired in his last match which he lost in 2 sets to Christopher Eubanks? His return game was a little below par.

This is a tough one to predict. I give Fritz a slight edge. Sandgren’s match fitness is unlikely to be at the level it would normally be at mid season and his 5 matches will have sapped his energy. Fritz should be fresher.

Lay Sandgren around 1.60 to 1.70 and remove liability around 2.30 to 2.40.

Johnson (1.74) v Paul (2.2)

Due to start at 12:30 am.

Johnson won their only previous meeting which was in August 2018. It was in Winston Salem, USA on a hard court and he won in 2 sets.

Their 12 month results favour Johnson but they are more even in 2020. They are closely matched on hard courts.

Paul has played 5 matches during the pandemic and has lost them all. Four of his matches went to 3 sets and he won the opening set in 3 of those 4 matches.

Johnson had not won a match in lockdown until this week. He has beaten Reilly Opelka and Taylor Fritz in 3 sets.

I give a slight edge to Steve Johnson tonight but it does look likely to go to 3 sets. We can back him around 2.20 in set 1 or wait to lay the set 1 winner.

WTA Friendship Cup, 5th July 2020

There are 4 matches today but I am only interested in 2 of them. As I am going to say in all matches this month this is an exhibition and you are advised to use reduced stakes.

The matches are not yet on Betfair but this event’s matches were on there yesterday.

There is no change to WTA rules. They play the best of 3 normal sets.

Kuzmova (3.94) v Vondrousova (1.31) – Prices from Pinnacle

Due to start at 1 pm.

Kuzmova won their only previous meeting. That was in 2016 in an ITF clay tournament. She won in a third set tie break.

Kuzmova has better overall results in the last 12 months. Vondrousova missed the second half of last season and had surgery in a wrist injury.

Kuzmova has played just 4 matches during the pandemic. She won them all. Three were on clay. Yesterday she beat Martincova in 3 sets. It was a very tight match with each player only being broken once.

Vondrousova has played 5 matches during Covid-19. She has won 3 of them including yesterday’s match with Schmiedlova. She lost just 3 games in her only hard court match of the lockdown. Schmiedlova was poor but Vondrousova played well. She faced 3 break points which were all saved.

Vondrousova starts priced too low today. The score against Schmiedlova flattered her. She will have to work harder today.

Lay Vondrousova around 1.20 to 1.25 and remove liability around 1.60. Lay the set 1 winner.

Schmiedlova (3.00) v Martincova (1.36) – Prices from Pinnacle

Due to start at 2:30 pm

This will be their first meeting.

Overall results strongly favour Martincova in the last 12 months.

Schmiedlova has played 4 matches during lockdown. She beat 2 low ranked opponents but won just 1 game against Bencic on clay and 3 games against Vondrousova yesterday.

Martincova has played 7 matches since the tour was suspended in March. She has had some excellent results. She lost 3 matches but only Karolina Pliskova beat her in straight sets.

This really should be comfortable for Martincova. Ideally she gets broken at the start of the match to give us a better price.
