Sabalenka won this title last season. She reached the final in Stuttgart last week and didn’t play that well in the final. Last season she also reached the final in Stuttgart before winning in Madrid. The difference this season is that last year she had a week’s rest in between the two tournaments. She had not had a lot of time to get over the disappointment of last week’s defeat by Swiatek. Madrid starting late in the week does do her a small favour though.
Anisimova reached the semis in Charleston this month. Last season she reached the quarter finals in Parma in May
