WTA Cluj, second round

Cristian v Petkovic

Due to start around midday

1st meeting.

Long term overall win % are quite even. Cristian has better long term clay win %. She won 29 of her last 50. Petkovic won 25 of 50. Their clay results in the last 12 months and in 2021 are even.

Cristian made a slow start against Jani in the last round and was broken at the start. That isn’t unusual for her but once she sorted her serve out she was in control. She lost just 3 games. She reached the qfinals in Palermo 3 weeks ago.

Petkovic has found some improved form recently and made the final in Hamburg and a semi final in Belgrade last week. Petkovic can win this but will probably need 3 sets.

Back Petkovic around 2.00 to 2.10 and remove some or all liability at 1.60. Lay the set 1 winner.

WTA San Jose, second round

Riske v Konjuh

Due to start at 11pm

H2H 1-1. Most recent Aug 2016, hard, Riske in 3 sets. Konjuh won on grass in 2015.

Long term overall win % are much better for Konjuh. She won 33 of her last 50. Riske won 24 of 50. On hard courts, Konjuh won 30 of her last 50. Riske won 25 of 50.

Konjuh’s hard results are stronger in the last year and in 2021. She has come through the qual rounds this week and beat Bouzkova in the main draw in 3 close sets.

Riske has been in poor form for a while but beat Vandeweghe in 2 sets in the last round. Riske’s serve wasn’t great. She hit 7 double faults which is unlike her. Vandeweghe’s 2nd serve was poor.

Riske will need her best form to win this and we have not seen that from her for quite a while. Back Konjuh around 2.10 to 2.20 and remove some or all liability around 1.65.

Free Tennis Tips – 3rd August 2021

ATP Washington, First round

Johnson v Ramanathan

Due to start at 8:30 pm

Johnson 1-0 (July 2018, grass, 3 sets). Long term hard win % are better for Johnson. He won 31 of his last 50. Ramanathan has a better win % on hard this season. He won 12 of 17 on hard in 2021.

Johnson has a decent record in Washington but not so much recently. He has been in the semis twice and the q finals once.

Ramanathan has played Challengers on hard this season. He reached the q finals in the Lexington Challenger and the final of the Cary Challenger in July. He has had very little success in main tour hard court events other than reaching the semis in ATP Pune in November 2019.

If Johnson is not sharp then he will have problems with Ramanathan but if he is near his best, especially on serve, he wins. Back Johnson around 1.90 to 2.00 and remove liability around 1.60. Back Johnson if he loses set 1.

ATP Washington, First round

Pospisil v Korda

Due to start at 8:30 pm

Posp 1-0 (Nov 2019, indoors, 2 sets). Long term overall win % are better for Korda. He won 36 of his last 50. On hard courts Pospisil has a slight lead winning 30 of his last 50. Korda won 27 of 50. Results this season and in the last 12 months on hard favour Korda.

Pospisil reached the 4th round at the US Open 2020 but has not had much hard court success since. He has had some tough draws to be fair.

Korda reached the q finals in Miami in March, beating Schwartzman and Karatsev. He reached the final at ATP Delray Beach in Jan.

We have a fair chance of 3 sets but Korda is starting to fulfil some of his potential and his confidence is high. Back Korda around 1.95 to 2.10 and remove some or all liability at 1.55. Back him if he loses set 1.

WTA San Jose, First round

Yastremska v Liu

Yastremska reached the 3rd round in New York in Aug 2020. In Jan 2020 she reached the final in Adelaide and in Feb 2020 reached the 3rd round in Doha.

All Liu’s good hard results were in ITF’s. In Feb. she reached the semi finals in Orlando and the final in Boca Raton, USA. IN March she reached the final in the Newport Beach ITF tournament.

Back Yastremska around 2.20 and remove liab around 1.65. Lay the set 1 winner.
