WTA US Open, Semi Final

Raducanu v Sakkari

Due to start at 1:30 am

1st meeting. Both have excellent hard court results.

Raducanu has come through the qual rounds. She has not lost a set. Her return of serve caused problems for Zhang, Sorribes Tormo and Rogers but I expected Olympic gold winner Bencic to be able to deal with it. Bencic had served well all week but once Raducanu got over her early nerves, Bencic looked nervous herself. Raducanu was broken in her first service game but was not broken again.

Sakkari has lost just 1 set. That was against Andreescu in the 4th round. In all other rounds, she has served well. In the q final against Pliskova she served incredibly well and didn’t face a single break point.

Stats for the tournament favour Raducanu. Both are playing for a place in their first slam final. The fact that Raducanu is in this position is simply amazing. The nervous girl we saw in the 4th round at Wimbledon seems a very long way away. Normal rules don’t apply when assessing this girl. She has been nervous in the first service game in the last 2 rounds. We have to expect that she will be just as nervous tonight.

Lay Sakkari if she breaks first. Remove liability around 1.80. There has to be a good chance of 3 sets. Surely she won’t beat Sakkari in 2! It would make a fantastic film script if Raducanu reaches the final. This is all about who handles the nerves better.
